World's smallest electric hybrid Airship

Postby Airshipcenter » Wed Jan 11, 2017 8:48 pm

This looks like a perfect alternative for those of us 'wanting' a personal blimp but not being able to afford one: a small hybrid airship. Owning a blimp comes with a lot of extra costs, ground crew, mooring mast & truck that need to travel everywhere you go, large hanger etc. Not a problem for a professional company, but definitely impossible for the average Joe. This however looks like a great compromise.

I think the ride would be similar to a WhoopyFly, which would be cheaper since it doesn't require helium or a hangar. It would be interesting to fill a WhoopyFly with helium though:

That looks very similar. Both are a bit like a cheaper (and I assume slower) version of the Goodyear Inflatoplane. I wonder if they can withstand the same weather conditions that paramotors can.

Another news about Voliris : http://www.theballoonjournal.com/voliris_natac/
They are going to think bigger scaling up this sympathic blimp "multi-bump" machine !!

I don't think this would be a good alternative for a 1 manned blimp, because it can't really hover, as its a hybrid airship. Flying this would be much more like flying a standard ultralight and then it'd make more sense to just get a standard ultralight and enjoy all their practical benefits.

The best and most realistic attempt for a 1 manned dirigible is a simple gas balloon with a para motor below it.
Something as featured in this video:

Unlike the small hybrid airship in the OP, a balloon like this can just hover and thus the flight experience is really unique compared to an ultralight aircraft or ultralight hybrid airship, since you don't need to worry about maintaining speed to maintain lift. Of course, optimum weather conditions are required. Since you also need to come down and to save yourself some money I think hydrogen is much more suitable for a balloon like this compared to helium as you can simply vent the gas to come down, meaning you need no complicated and large vectored thrust systems. I think the hydrogen risk for a small 1 manned balloon is forgivable and considering the safety record of hydrogen operated gasballoons in Germany and elsewhere, its maybe even safer than a standard ultralight.
